Can Stress Really Make You Fat? Learning What Really Makes You Eat More Then You Should!

By Mike On September 28, 2009 No Comments

We’ve all had our fair share of stressful moments in life. Looking back, some events may seem silly now (a grade 10 science exam, who cares about memorizing the periodic table?) while others were monumental like a driving test or your first job interview.

It doesn’t get any easier as we grow older with financial burdens, relationships, or a loved one’s illness making life particularly challenging and frustrating along the way.

Don\'t blame stress for eating more then you should.
[Oh my god... this poor girl is so stressed her tongue turned into a...remote control? What the hell is that thing?

The idea for this article was conceived during my last trip to the grocery store and walking by the magazine stands. September is “back-to-school” season in most parts of the world and there was

Want to Lose Fat Faster and More Consistently? Start Writing!

By Mike On August 27, 2009 11 Comments

Looking at the food court in a local shopping mall today I thought about these two questions:

How many people have calories on their mind?

Do any of them count calories?

I’m gonna go out on the proverbial limb here and say probably none of them.

Harsh? Maybe. But I too was once a frequent visitor of the common food courts eating fattening foods and feeling my clothes getting tighter by the fry. So chalk this up to experience.

After several failed attempts at losing weight, I finally took some responsibility and found an unlikely weapon against fat-> The PENCIL!

Write Your Goals For Faster Fat Loss[I used to yawn or skip right over any talk about goal setting. But after giving it a go in my fat loss journey, I'm using it

Eat Fat to Burn Fat?

By Mike On July 30, 2009 6 Comments

Fat loss tip extraordinaire or some old-school reverse psychology? Don’t worry, I had the same reaction when I first discovered eating fat was necessary for losing weight.

Eat fat to burn fat? We\'re not pulling your leg

Too often we hear confusing messages about dietary fats and what it really does to your body like:

1. Fats make you gain body fat.

2. Fats lead to heart attacks.

3. Fats are evil and should be avoided at all costs.

To put it bluntly, the three points above are FALSE .

We’ve been completely misled when it comes to fats.

Fats are essential for our body’s hormone production, skin health, absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, and even burning body fat.

Studies have been conducted to attempt to elevate cholesterol levels using high-fat diets. Most all of them have back

Fat Burning Spices Turn Up The Heat On Healthy Meals

By Mike On July 27, 2009 7 Comments

I had some really crazy offers for fat burning remedies this week in my email inbox. Offers such as a six pack of hydroxycitric acid all the way to pre-packaged garlic cloves. I think I might have a problem!

These emails are like Entertainment Tonight or Celebrity News for me… probably because they are so comical in their claims and the poor grammar never gets old.

Getting back on track: I have a new-found love of herbs and spices after having dinner with friends at a restaurant in Toronto called Spice Route.

A visit to Marrakesh, Morocco introduces me to the world of spices
[Talking about spices got me thinking back to my weekend trip to Marrakesh, Morocco. The food markets in the town square were overflowing with herbs and spices.]

It’s Indo-Chinese cuisine that tantalized my taste buds like nothing of recent memory. Perusing

The Best Fat Loss Exercise? Can It Really Be The Best?

By Mike On July 16, 2009 7 Comments

Flipping through my local newspaper last Saturday, I came across the above title minus the question mark. (Bonus points for anyone who can name my local paper in the comments section. Here’s a HINT)

I’m definitely uneasy about using descriptive words like “the best” or “#1″ when talking about any health related matter, especially exercise movements for fat loss, because we should all know by now that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to losing fat and staying fit.

Victoria Secret Models Are Number 1
[Now if these girls told me this exercise was #1, I just might have to listen!]

Think about it: If we all lose fat or build muscle the same way, then there would only be a need for one book or

Better Breathing Habits for Better Health

By Mike On July 13, 2009 No Comments

Everyone can do it, but so few people know how to do it well. Breathing is something we just do!

It’s not something talked about in great lengths in main stream media or print but if you’re into activities like Yoga or meditation (which I’m starting to take a liking too) then you can appreciate the many benefits of breathing better and taking note of your improved physical and mental well-being.

Better Breathing is not possible underwater
[Found this pic along with a bunch of other cool underwater shots at H2o Photography . I always wondered what it would be like to breathe underwater and the possibilities of possessing this super power. I'm such a

Stay Lean During a Long Weekend BBQ!

By Mike On July 9, 2009 1 Comment

Happy belated Canada Day to my fellow Canucks and salutations to my friends south of the border who celebrated Independence Day. Chances are we all attended or hosted at least one BBQ or cookout this past week and why not?

It’s the summer time season and there’s nothing more enjoyable then spending time with family and friends while enjoying food over an open fire.

But it’s also crucial your preparing healthy and safe BBQ meals by keeping the grill clean, washing your hands and following other BBQ tips for an enjoyable cookout.

Key to Faster Fat Loss Is All About Timing!

By Mike On July 6, 2009 5 Comments

The time, or rest between sets, (a series of exercises done consecutively i.e. he did 4 sets of 10 reps on the bench press) is an important factor in your ability to complete a workout.

Very often the question raised on the gym floor is, how long should I wait after completing a set to start another set?

The answer is: It depends on your goals.

Distractions in the Gym Can Ruin Your Fat Loss Goals
[Do you frequently spend your rest periods looking at yourself in the mirror or at the hottie on the treadmill? Stop! Focus on the time between your sets and you'll get more done (fat loss and muscle building) in less time!]

More Rest For More Strength

TFLA Challenge – Could You Go 30 Days Without Alcohol?

By Michael On June 25, 2009 4 Comments

Life is normally not very exciting. Most of us get up in the morning and live each day almost as an exact mimic of the one before.

We rise, brush our teeth, wash away our less than lovely aromas, go to work, deal with it on a reactive level, come home, toss in a frozen dinner, watch a little TV, and get ready to shut ‘er down and start it all over again the following day.

Personally, fitness is just one weapon I use in my arsenal to break up this boring cycle. Three or four times a week I’ll step into a gym, or onto a running trail and tell myself, “Self, you are going to be better than you were the last time we were here.” Then I don’t just “work out”, I train.

To be stronger. To be faster. To be better than I currently am.

Healthy Eating Can Be Dangerous to Your Health?

By Mike On June 22, 2009 4 Comments

Would you be upset with yourself for eating a slice of birthday cake at a party?

Are you uncomfortable eating food someone else has prepared because you aren’t in control of the ingredients?

Do you beat yourself up or become depressed after a day of unhealthy eating choices?

extreme diet can be dangerous to your health

According to Brad Pilon, nutrition expert and author, these could be signs of “Obsessive Compulsive Eating Habits” a term he has coined for going to extremes in the pursuit of a diet that’s supposed to be good for you.

In his book, Eat Stop Eat: The Radical New Approach to Nutrition That Can Burn Fat, Improve
