I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard that fasting (or commonly referred to as starving by the uneducated) will cause you to lose your muscle mass. Every time someone asks me how I stay in good shape they think I’m lying when I say intermittent fasting is a major weapon in my overall health and fitness plan.
What? Come on man… you’re supposed to eat to get muscle, protein with every meal, 17 meals a day…
OK, I exaggerated that last one a little but you get the point. Fasting and the fear of losing your hard-earned muscle seems to be one of the most prevalent myths out there and it’s time to get to the bottom of it.

The food industry is constantly creating new ‘functional foods’ that will help you lose weight, reduce blood pressure and cholesterol, help keep your blood sugar and insulin levels in check and so on and so on. When did eating become so complicated, and since when could food do all of these magical things? If eating the right food was so magically easy there wouldn’t be book stores FILLED with diet and weight loss books.
Italian Ice Cream to me is the food that cures all. I consider myself a fairly healthy eater, but if I had to pick one food to eat everyday for the rest of my life, this would be it. Any time I am in Italy, I immediately adopt the ‘one ice cream a day’ rule.

Since fasting has been coming up a lot more frequently in the news lately, and its something I am a big supporter of I wanted to share one of my fasting experiences with all of you. I had already completed my first 24hour fast weeks before this occasion. The first time is quite the challenge and its purely mind of matter. I call it “resetting the clock” on your personal hunger meter where you are separating your body’s actual hunger from the “food addiction” you’ve acquired over your entire life.
