Can Stress Really Make You Fat? Learning What Really Makes You Eat More Then You Should!

By Mike On September 28, 2009 No Comments

We’ve all had our fair share of stressful moments in life. Looking back, some events may seem silly now (a grade 10 science exam, who cares about memorizing the periodic table?) while others were monumental like a driving test or your first job interview.

It doesn’t get any easier as we grow older with financial burdens, relationships, or a loved one’s illness making life particularly challenging and frustrating along the way.

Don\'t blame stress for eating more then you should.
[Oh my god... this poor girl is so stressed her tongue turned into a...remote control? What the hell is that thing?

The idea for this article was conceived during my last trip to the grocery store and walking by the magazine stands. September is “back-to-school” season in most parts of the world and there was

TFLA Challenge – Could You Go 30 Days Without Alcohol?

By Michael On June 25, 2009 4 Comments

Life is normally not very exciting. Most of us get up in the morning and live each day almost as an exact mimic of the one before.

We rise, brush our teeth, wash away our less than lovely aromas, go to work, deal with it on a reactive level, come home, toss in a frozen dinner, watch a little TV, and get ready to shut ‘er down and start it all over again the following day.

Personally, fitness is just one weapon I use in my arsenal to break up this boring cycle. Three or four times a week I’ll step into a gym, or onto a running trail and tell myself, “Self, you are going to be better than you were the last time we were here.” Then I don’t just “work out”, I train.

To be stronger. To be faster. To be better than I currently am.

extreme diet can be dangerous to your health

Eat breakfast

By Mike On August 26, 2008 No Comments

For many of us, eating breakfast helps to fuel our mornings and prevent over-eating later in the day. This fact was studied formally in a piece of research published in the Journal of Nutrition. The results of this study showed that those who had consumed the bulk of their food near the end of the day ate, on average, significantly more calories than individuals who ate more substantial amounts of food early on.

Typically we use a significant amount of energy in the morning and the body needs fuel to “gas up” from an evening of slumber. With that being said, when sleeping our brain and bodies need to rest and process the information from the day and shouldn’t be slowed down to process an extra large dinner or heavy late night snack.

So, to put a natural break on the appetite, make sure you don’t skip breakfast.

Forget about calories

By Mike On August 26, 2008 1 Comment

While there is some truth in the calorie principle, it dismisses the fact that different types of calories are burned differently within our bodies. While fat is often singled out for attention in low-calorie approaches, there is evidence that when calorie intakes are the same, individuals that eat the most fat actually lose the most weight.

Also, the effect the food you eat now has on your appetite later will also determine, ultimately, its influence on food intake and weight.  For example, if you are eating fiber rich foods opposed to munching down a bags of chips.  The key to long-term weight loss is not to concentrate on the quantity of the food that you consume, but its quality. Sniff a banana, an apple, or a peppermint when you feel hungry

By Mike On August 26, 2008 No Comments

You might feel silly, but it works. When Alan R. Hirsch, M.D., neurological director of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, tried this with 3,000 volunteers, he found that the more frequently people sniffed, the less hungry they were and the more weight they lost — an average of 30 pounds each. One theory is that sniffing the food tricks the brain into thinking you’re actually eating it.
