Losing Fat and Moving Your Body on the Cheap!
Now with the warmer weather arriving, it’s a great time to get outside and get moving! Whatever you choose to do this season to stay active, it doesn’t have to require you to refinance your mortgage or burn a hole in your wallet.

Here are five inexpensive activities that you can enjoy to stay fit and lose weight:
1. Walking and Jogging
You can get active on your own or with a group, all that is required is a pair of running shoes, shorts, and some t-shirts. Does it get any simpler then this? Probably not, but if you want to make it more interesting, get yourself a pedometer and keep track of your progress.
2. Hiking
Similar to our first suggestion of walking and jogging, hiking takes it up a couple of notches on the challenge meter. Get out and explore local hiking trails. Wherever you live, there is bound to be something close by that you can bike, drive or bus to access the natural environment. The changing terrain will surely work your core and leg muscles in new and interesting ways.
3. Soccer and Basketball
Yes, I love soccer and so does the rest of the world as it continues to be one of the most popular sports in the world. This sport can be played in small or large groups and only requires a ball and a decent pair of running shoes or cleats. The popularity of basketball has been steadily rising and similarly to soccer, the requirements to play are very basic. A ball and a pair of basketball shoes are all that are really required while outdoor basketball nets can be found at almost every park or school. Call your local recreation centre to find out about any soccer or basketball leagues happening in your area.
4. Ultimate Frisbee
I’ll be the first to admit, it took me until university to finally be exposed to this activity, but Frisbee is a fun sport to play with family and friends. It can be competitive or leisurely, depending on the level of activity you would like. Find out if there is a local ultimate league in your community. HINT: Check your local college/university for the not so mainstream activities like Frisbee.
5. Gardening
Working the land or yard work as most people know it by, is not only a great way to get active, but this activity can also be very relaxing! Did you know? Performing 60 minutes of gardening can be the equivalent of walking approximately five kilometres. So, walk down to your local gardening center and pick up those seeds to grow yourself a healthy vegetable garden. It’s the perfect combination of getting fit and eating healthy!
