You’ve heard this one before but why is breakfast so important?
The simplest answer lies in refueling your body and giving you the necessary energy to start a new day.
Various studies also suggests it’s good for our physical and mental well-being. Long-term omission of breakfast from the list of meals for the day could result in obesity, cardiovascular disease, and Type II diabetes.
If that didn’t send shivers down your back, the short-term effects are equally staggering. Breakfast helps the physiological action to kick-start; it also regulates metabolism. In the absence of a nutritious breakfast, the body is constantly battling dropping glucose levels, and constant cravings throughout the day, leading to an overdose of calories – leaving you feeling fatigued and lethargic.
So what does a healthy breakfast look like?
It consists of variety and should include at least three out of the four major food groups (fruit and vegetables, grains, milk and alternatives and meat and alternatives).
Here are some of our favorite options for a healthy breakfast:
1. Stir low-fat or fat-free granola into a bowl of low-fat or fat-free yogurt. Top with sliced fruit (apples, berries, or bananas work well).
2. Add strawberries, blueberries, or bananas to your whole grain waffles, pancakes, cereal, oatmeal, or toast and add a glass of low fat milk.
3. If you don’t like to eat first thing in the morning then have fruit and yogurt with ¼ cup of nuts such as almonds at your morning break.
4. Top toasted whole-grain bread with peanut or almond butter and sliced bananas, and add a glass of low fat milk.
5. Add vegetables like bell peppers, broccoli, spinach, mushrooms, or tomatoes to your egg or egg white omelet and add whole grain toast and glass of low fat milk.
6. Canned, dried, and frozen fruits and vegetables are also good options. Look for fruit without added sugar or syrups and vegetables without added salt, butter, or cream sauces. Add canned fruits to your low fat yogurt and top it off with low fat granola or a bran cereal. Use the frozen fruit to make smoothies with milk for a healthy breakfast to go.
