Most of us have had times when we were thin, times when we were overweight, and everything in between. Others have been overweight or thin their entire lives. But what many weight lose “guru” forgot to discuss is how this affects us psychologically? And how it may affect our ability to lose weight?
[The trillion dollar diet industry is evidence that most people want to be thinner than they are, but its impossible to pull away from things like chocolate cake magnetism if you don't even believe that you can]
Everyday we assign ourselves certain identities based on where we are at the time; the jobs we have, the relationship we’re in, and other decisions we’ve made. This can be harmful to achieving your future goals, if the present you is nothing like the future version that you would like to achieve.
The past me (4-5 years ago), sat at a desk, 30 pounds overweight, eating lunches for 3 by myself, and commuting 2 hours into Toronto each way to work a job I hated. BUT, what made me the most miserable, was knowing all day every day, the life I wanted had nothing to do with the life I was living.
Fast forward to present day and I am living a different life. I run my own business, I work from home, and I’ve lost that 30 lbs (and then some) and keep it off by knowing my caloric limits and how to work those limits into my ongoing affair with gelato.
Now as you can imagine, this story would be a lot different if I just accepted my life as it was. If I had accepted that I was destined to commute to work for the rest of my life, that work “isn’t supposed to be fun”, and that I was just stuck with my current weight… I dare not think what emotional state I would be in today. Honestly, the thought scares me.
The popular question I hear from a lot of our readers is, can we morph our current identities into a more powerful and confident place?
OF COURSE WE CAN!!
THE WEIGHT LOSS MIND SET….
One of my biggest pet peeves about the diet industry are the countless pages (especially on th
e interwebs) of misinformation and sabotage.
Now don’t misunderstand me, there are tiny of slivers of truth in SOME of the pseudo ailments you read about, (broken thyroid, broken metabolism, hormone problem), but they are in such a small portion of the population that usually this info. is only responsible for fear, unnecessary doctor’s appointments and a generation of people who think they are stuck helplessly in a body and life they want to change.
From so many of our readers at TFLA, I hear story after story of people, not just losing weight, but using the triumph over their own bodies as a spring board to completely changing their lives…..
Better jobs…
Better relationships (including a way better sex life)…
Better energy levels…
Everything just gets better…
And it all starts with the belief that, YOU ARE NOT YOUR BODY.
I wanted to write this post giving you permission to be whoever you are now, with the ability of being whoever you want to be tomorrow. And I hope TFLA can help you start and continue that journey.
Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re broken.
If you want to start making a difference today, here are 3 EASY action steps that I used to start my weight loss journey, because:
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. -Lao-tzu
3 EASY STEPS TO START LOSING WEIGHT…
STEP 1: Don’t drink your calories- For the next month drink only water, herbal tea, or coffee black.
STEP 2: Step outside and take a 30-60min walk at least 4x a week.
STEP 3: In between meals, if you find yourself craving something with a lot of calories, eat an apple and then wait 20 minutes to see if you still think your sugary or carb heavy treat is worth it. You can substitute any of your favorite fruits or veggies for Apples. I just find apples are usually easiest to find, no preparation is involved, and well… I think they’re tasty
If you also want to check out a really cool story about how my buddy Rob Poulos and his wife Kalen lost a whole bunch of weight after they were two kids deep into their marriages, check out Rob and Kalen’s FREE video —— >>> HERE.
Rob’s system that has helped over fifty thousand people already, is called the Fat Burning Furnace, yes, the name and website are a little corny and I tell him all the time, but its also helped a lot of people.

Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.
Yes, a bit strong, but I believe it carries some truth. A few years ago I lost about 20lbs. I knew these extra lbs annoyed me, but I hadn’t realized the real impact they had on my life until they were gone. I had been weighed down (figuratively and literally) by my extra lbs and felt a surge of freedom, confidence and personal satisfaction with them gone.
The cake magnetism isn’t as strong as it once was 3 years ago because I know that that piece of cake (as delicious and chocolaty as it may be) won’t put the same smile on my face as the scale did, the day I finally reached my goal weight!
Thanks for the great post!
Yes, we slowly have to move away from focusing on the temptation (cake) towards doing the right things most of the time which will make our dream come true bit by bit. Always directing the focus back on the goal was important for me to finally stick to my diet!
