Author: Jon Benson (with Holly Rigsby and Daniel Topkis)
Website: www.EveryOtherDayDiet.com
The Every Other Day Diet is not a new concept. In fact, this program is based on the follow-up to the original Every Other Day Diet plan that was created by Jon Benson back in 2007. Not resting on his laurels, this time Benson’s enlisted the help of nutrition and exercise expert Holly Rigsby, CPT, and author of the Fit Yummy Mummy program (click here for full review), and “the Smoothie Guru", Daniel Topkis, M.S., to leave no stone unturned in the battle of the bulge.
So now that we have introductions out of the way it’s time to examine this program and see if it’s worth you’re hard-earned money and can ultimately do the job on shrinking your waistline!
The Problem with Most Diets
Take a look at the clearance section of a major retailer like WalMart or a chain bookstore like Indigo. You can almost always find at least a handful of conventional diets books that require long periods of calorie restriction and huge amounts of will power. Therefore, it’s no surprise that many people who follow these diets struggle and ultimately quit over the long haul.
And that really… well… sucks to put it bluntly! People need a long-term solution, which doesn’t require zen-like willpower, the calorie totals of a bird, and the absence of your favorite foods. You and I need a solution that’s more about our lifestyle and something that becomes second nature to us. Enough with these unsustainable diets – we’re sick of gaining back whatever weight we lost, and then some!
What Exactly is Every Other Day Dieting?
Benson describes the Every Other Day Diet as a way to tap into body fat for fuel, and reduce calories without having you’re body reduce the all important metabolic rate.
Basically, if you reduce calories too much too soon, the body’s metabolic rate slows down and inhibits your ability to lose weight. But at the same time, you must reduce the amount of calories you consume or there’s no chance in hell you can burn off those flabby arms or unsightly belly fat. Therefore, the key is to trick the body into

I like examples so let me use one to complete the Every Other Day Diet description:
For two days, you eat slightly more calories than you’re body requires. Then you eat less for two days, more for a single day, and less for two more days. Over the course of a week, you end up eating fewer calories than you need, resulting in a caloric deficit.
NOTE: When I say slightly this isn’t a free pass to lunch and dinner at the local all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet for lunch… and dinner.
Since the body’s metabolism is always kept in a guessing mode, it never slows down to adapt to a calorie restrictive diet, and the weight continues to burn off!
The 3 Conditions for Success with the Every Other Day Diet
The author Jon Benson states very early on in the book that in order to succeed with the Every Other Day Diet lifestyle, you must “take to heart” these 3 conditions:
- You must be dedicated – Whenever you decide to make a change in your life, you need to be dedicated and committed to the goal.
- You must be willing to do some form of exercise – Study after study has demonstrated that the only way to stay lean for life is to exercise.
- You must be reasonable– Forget the 20 pounds in 20-day scams. Set yourself up for long-term success instead.
Starvation and Deprivation = Failure
We can pretty much all agree that a diet designed to deprive us various foods fails every time. Instead of starvation and deprivation, the Every Other Day Diet uses what’s called Planned Variance – you will have Burn Days and Feed Days.
On Burn Days, you’ll eat low-calorie foods that are high in protein and medium in carbs. On Feed Days, you basically get to eat whatever you want without pigging out like Audrey Griswald in National Lampoon’s European Vacation;) The idea is to keep your body guessing with variety in your diet so that you are neither starving nor overeating.
What’s a SNAPP?
A major improvement according to Benson with the second edition of the Every Other Day Diet is the inclusion of the SNAPP! System. In short, it’s your game plan for what, when, and how much too eat. Before we go any further, let’s take a look at what SNAPP stands for:
Shakes
Nuts
Apples
Protein
Produce
I really enjoyed this section of the program as Benson clearly explains the positive benefits of using the SNAPP system. There’s way too many to cover here but I’ll cover a bunch of benefits that really stood out for me personally.
An Emphasis on Protein and Produce
Studies repeatedly show that protein and produce (veggies and low-sugar fruits) are key to long-term fat burning success. Having adequate amounts of protein, but not crazy bodybuilder quantities, combined with plenty of produce foods will give you more energy than you thought possible while stripping away stubborn body fat for good.
No Calorie Counting or Complex Food Measurements
I used to count calories as did many successful dieters and fitness professionals – it’s almost like a right of passage - but guess what? It’s not a long-term weight loss strategy and chances are you either memorize the numbers or stop counting and regain any and all lost weight! Using the SNAPP system the only numbers you have to count initially is the grams of protein and carbohydrate you consume. After a few weeks you won’t even have to do that. Once you learn how much is just right it’s a…get ready for it…you know it’s coming… snap!Just couldn’t refuse the pun!
Welcome Meat-eaters, Vegetarians, and Vegans
Very rarely you’ll find such an inclusive system that includes other dietary choices like vegetarians and vegans. Basically, there is nothing in SNAPP that a vegan cannot eat. The meal plans are that flexible. The Meat-eaters will especially love the nighttime meals.

5 Different Food Plans
People have various dieting experiences along with unique weight loss goals – hence the five different food plans. In the Every Other Day Diet program you’ll find:
1. The Primer Plan – Beginner dieters
2. The Lifestyle Phase 1 Plan – For beginners and intermediate dieters
3. The Lifestyle Phase 2 Plan – Intense fat burning
4. The Extreme Plan – Bodybuilders and muscle building
5. The Ultimate Plan – For the fitness obsessed
I like the fact that Benson breaks down the stereotype that weight loss is only for “fat people”, or the morbidly obese. This type of mentality has led many people into a false sense of security and continued patterns of unhealthy eating and little exercise.
So which food plan is best for me?
Honestly, it doesn’t matter if you’re just starting out or if you’ve tried a bunch of diets and ultimately gained all your weight back. Everyone will be comfortable with the Primer and Phase 1 choices. You’ll be eating SNAPP foods 5 times a day, and every other day you can eat one meal of your choice. Benson vows that as long as you follow his recommendations, you’ll lose weight.
What’s a food plan without recipes?
The last section of the book has something that many other diet books fail to deliver: A full recipe section! Over 40 pages of delicious recipes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals with shakes and treats recipes included too.
This really caught my attention because I’m so accustom to seeing the good food and bad food lists that populate so many of today’s diet books. Not with Every Other Day Diet! For example, how does a sweet and sour energy blast shake sound? Let me tell you it tastes even better.
What’s Included with This Program?
I think it’s pretty ridiculous the amount of stuff (over $500 worth) that this author includes but frugal he is not. When you purchase the Every Other Day Diet Standard Package, you also get:
- ONE full year of support for any questions you may have
- Weekly recipes to make sure you maximize your weight loss
- Perfect Posture in 30 Days! by Vince DelMonte, CPT (book)
- Cholesterol LIES! - The truth about Cholesterol and your Health that Doctors do not want you to know! by Dr. Duane Graveline, MD (book)

And Last But Certainly Not Least
Lifetime Free Updates of The Every Other Day Diet
Benson is continually adding to the Every Other Day Diet package above so I wouldn't be surprised if he included an all-inclusive vacation by now;)
Besides Vince DelMonte’s Six Pack Quest program, you can’t find a weight loss plan which covers everything there is about losing weight, getting fit, and becoming a healthier person like the Every Other Day Diet.
Verdict
At a price tag of only $49 for the Every Other Day Diet (standard package) it is quite affordable. Throw in the long list of bonuses above and you’re definitely getting the best bang for the buck regarding effective weight loss information.
Speaking of weight loss information, the diet itself is simple to follow and offers people the choice of five different food plans based on their desired goals.
NOTE: The deluxe package is $20 more but offers up even more goodies like M-Power motivational audio, a Fit Yummy Mummy Trail, and a membership to Global Health for all the fitness resources you could ever ask for. It's a lot of stuff to digest - pardon the pun - so if your short for time and want to jump right into it then go standard.

I also like the fact that the author Jon Benson doesn’t just focus on what you eat but also looks at the emotional aspects of the challenge in losing weight. Benson really does a great job in talking about the dedication and mindset needed to make a change with healthy food choices and consistent exercise. He makes no crazy promises about massive weight loss overnight, but instead prepares you for the journey to fat loss by way of patience and hard-work.
I’ve heard complaints about his web-site only offering a video to introduce the program. Unfortunately, we’ve been subjected to too many poor websites that most of us just click around a web-site to look for information out of habit. That’s the beauty of his web-site! He’s stripped away all the fancy graphics and distracting images and instead delivers all the important information in the middle of your screen by way of a video. I must say it’s simplicity at it’s best!
Overall, the Every Other Day Diet is a fantastic program for losing weight and becoming healthy. Counting calories, dissecting nutrition labels, and depriving yourself of your favorite foods is no way to enjoy life today or tomorrow. This program is a long-term lifestyle plan designed to help you lose weight gradually, then keep your ideal body for life!

Remember, the best weight loss program is the one you can stick with.
To your future you,
